Moving Checklist Part II: Moving Day and Move-In Day
So finally, it’s the big day – moving day. Hopefully you’ve made all the necessary preparations ( you can check out Part I of the Moving Checklist series), packed up everything and all that’s left is to load the boxes. But before you say goodbye to your old home, you should make sure everything has been taken care of. To ease the stress of moving day, make sure you keep this handy checklist with you:
For Moving Day:
- Are the kids and/or pets out of the house, so they don’t get in the way?
- Have some snacks and water ready for the movers
- Put all your keys together
- Strip the beds and dismantle the beds
- Did you create you inventory and checklist? Make sure you supervise the movers and check off each box as it is loaded in the van
- Sign the freight bill. Check that the declared valuation is correct, as this will be important should something go wrong
- Talk to the van driver and make sure he has the correct delivery address. Also, provide him/her with your contact number, just in case. Confirm their contact number, or at least a way to contact their company
- Do one last room-by-room inspection, to make sure you haven’t left anything
- Call the utility companies – make sure everything is set to shut off (or to be transferred) as scheduled
- Check if the water is shut off. Same with the ac, heater and lights.
- Make a list of the meter readings, just in case
- Contact your new landlord or real estate agent in your new home to make sure everything is ok
For Move-In Day
- Tidy up before the movers get there – sweep the floors and clean up the shelves so they can just put everything in place
- Check if the utilities are all working
- Have a copy of your floor plan at the front door and in all rooms, so the movers know where to place your furniture
- When the movers arrive, use your inventory and checklist as they unload
- Inspect boxes and furniture for damage – make sure to report any damage as soon as possible
- Unpack everything
