Money Saving Tips For Your Move

Transporting your precious goods from one place to another is not something you should scrimp on – after all, you get what you pay for. Sometimes, it’s always better to pay premium price for a good moving company, especially if all or most of your items are of high value and irreplaceable. However, there are ways to save on costs, without sacrificing quality. Cutting back on some other items will make sure your move still falls within your budget.

  • Give away excess items – go through your garage, attic, closets – every inch of your house – and try to decide which items you will be taking with you and which items can go. If you haven’t used it in 2 years, then get rid of it. Throw out anything that’s broken. This will save space and weight in your moving van. Also, especially for very long distances, see if some items may be cheaper to buy new in your new city, rather spending money to have something packed and shipped.
  • Schedule your move off-season and off-peak – summer is high season for moving. Check with your movers to see if you can get in right before or right after their peak season, to get the best rate. Depending on the location, spring and early fall still have temperate climates. Also, schedule the pick-up on weekdays, rather than weekends.
  • Shop around for the best rates – try to compare movers to get the best rates. If you get a rate online, try to call the company to get deeper discounts. Consider using u-pack companies, to save on costs.
  • Check around for discounted or free moving supplies – people are moving all the time. Check craigslist under the “free” category for people giving away moving boxes and supplies. If you live near a college or university, check the dorms and bulletin boards for students who may have extra boxes. As your grocery stores or department stores for extra boxes, but make sure they’re still sturdy.
  • Use luggage to store your clothes
  • Ask for help – this can be a great way to save on labor costs. Ask friends, neighbors and family to help you pack. Of course, it’s customary to serve food and drinks as a “reward”.
  • Be ready for your movers – avoid any delays which can incur extra fees – have your stuff ready when the movers arrive. Make sure you get the new house set-up when your movers get there, otherwise, they may charge you storage fees.
  • Check with specialty movers for certain items – if you’re moving items like pianos, getting a separate movers may save your more money. Regular movers may have to hire outside help and equipment, which can add to the cost.
  • If you’re moving away or to college, check with other students to see if you can split moving costs.
  • Disassemble your furniture yourself.
  • Save money by saving newspapers – use them as padding, but not for wrapping. Same with blankets and pillows.
  • Keep all your receipts – check with an accountant or tax specialist which items are deductible and can save money in the coming tax year.
  • Cut costs on ALL moving expenses – if you’re traveling long distances, you’ll incur expenses for things like gas, food and lodging. Try to pack picnic lunches along the way or stay with friends.
