Meet Your Neighbors
After all the hubbub of packing, loading, moving and unpacking, it’s finally time for you to settle in to your new home. It’s definitely best to get to know your neighbors, as well as your new neighborhood. Most people, when they see new people coming in, can be friendly and will bring in the welcome wagon. But beyond the niceties of the welcome, here are a few tips to reach out to your new neighbors.
- Start by being a good neighbor – be as courteous and considerate as you can. On move-in day, try not to block the street, as this will inconvenience your neighbors. Clean up after yourself and try not leave moving boxes and packing materials lying around your front lawn. If someone comes by to welcome you and leaves a gift, be sure to write a thank you note.
- Introduce the whole family – try to get together for playdates with your kids. If you pick them up or drop them off from school, talk to the other parents – ask questions and look to them for advice. Join the PTA.
- Approach them yourselves – if they haven’t stopped by, it may be because they don’t want to bother you while you’re unpacking. Walk up to their door, knock and introduce yourself.
- Host a party – this is one of the best ways to get your new neighbors all in one place. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate affair. Have a cocktail party at your house and serve some wine and cheese
- Visit public places – go to the park, public pool, gym, etc. You’re bound to run into your neighbors and you can chat them up.
- Be accessible – try sitting on your front porch, working in your garden, take a walk around your neighborhood. Wave and say hello to people who walk by.
- Attend community events – go to block parties, homeowner’s association meetings, any event where you can meet other people. If you hit it off with anyone, you can invite them to dinner (or they’ll invite you!)
