House Hunting Tips
Perhaps at some point in your life, you’ve always dreamed of what your perfect home would be – white picket fence, great big lawn, 2 stoies, 5 bedrooms, a large kitchen – these are some of the things many of us want in a home. But of course, aside from the physical appearance of a house, there are many other factors to consider. Here are some things you may want to consider when shopping for your new home.
Consider what your priorities are – if you have school-age children, then a good school district is definitely on top of your priorities. If you’re career is on top of your list, the you want something near to your workplace. If you’re an outdoorsy-type then you’ll prefer the somewhere outside the city center. What’s important to you determines the most important factor: location.
Once you’ve determined what you’re looking for, then you can do your research – get a map of the city you’re moving to and figure out where you want to live. Go on the internet and research the different neighborhoods and find out which ones are perfect for you.
Next, you’ll want to figure out the next most important factor – price point. What you can afford will help you narrow down where you can get a house and how big a house you can get. You may also want to try and get pre-approved for a mortgage, so you’ll know what price range you’ll be looking for. You may want the help of a professional, full-service realtor to help narrow things down for you. If you’re on a budget, be flexible and think about the things you can compromise on – maybe you can live a little farther out or perhaps you don’t really need such a big yard, but do keep your priorities in mind. If you’re handy and enjoy making renovations, considering maybe getting a fixxer-upper that you can restore on your own.
Once you’ve set up some house showings, you’ll want to be prepared before you get there. Make a list of questions such as: any repairs that need to be made, utilities or homeowner’s association fees, home inspection fees, closing costs, etc. Also, try to observe the neighborhoods the homes are in – are there any new construction going on? How’s the noise and traffic in the area? What are the businesses nearby and how close/far are you from essential services (fire, police, hospitals).
Keeping these tips in mind will help you find your perfect home in no time!
