From Old to New: Changing Your Address
Moving to a new place can be a hectic experience. There’s lots of planning, packing and moving to do that you might think that changing your address can be a simple task. However it may not be as straightforward as you think. Aside from changing your postal address, you still have to make the necessary changes on your other documents as well. Here are some tips to help you make the transition with ease.
There are 2 ways to make this change: the traditional way is to fill up a change of address card or PS form 3575 at your nearest post office. You can also go online to the official USPS change of address site and file the form electronically. You’ll need your old address and your new address, as well as all the names of the people moving with you.
You must remember that filling up this form means that your first class mail will be forwarded for up to one year. This gives you enough time to change your address individually with all the people who correspond to you. This can be done by sending each of a change of address card, or in some cases, updateing them through their website or their own forms. Some services or agencies you may have to contact individually are:
- Banks
- Credit Cards Companies
- Loan Companies
- Insurance Agencies
- Professional Groups you belong to
- Certification Boards
- Doctors
- Utilities
- Telephone/Cellphone
- Cable and Internet
- IRS
- Social Security and Pension Benefits
- Unemployment Benefits
- DMV – for your driver’s license and vehicle registrations
- Subscriptions, such as magazines, newspapers, DVD and book clubs etc.
For most of these services, you can request an “update address” form from the company or you may recieve it with your monthly billing.
