Avoid Injuries When Moving

Moving your home or your office can be a lot of work. There are all the arrangements and preparations you need to do, from hiring movers, to gathering moving supplies; and then there’s the moving day itself. Even if you hire full-service movers who will pack and load everything for your, there’s still a lot of running around and other physical activity to do. Keeping yourself, your family and your moving men safe during your move can be easy and will prevent you from incurring more bills from the hospital.
Clear the way for move. Move anything and everything that people can trip on. Roll up rugs and sweep the floor clean. Keep pets in one room and arrange to have someone watch any younger kids. Check your surroundings for anything that people can trip on, like cracked pavement. If you can’t fix it before moving day, mark it clearly with a sign or brightly colored chalk.
Pack light and pack well. Put heavy things, like books, in small boxes to limit the weight. Try to keep boxes under 50 pounds. Wrap all sharp edges on furniture with padding to prevent any injuries.
Watch out for sharp objects. While you’re packing, sealing and opening boxes, wield that knife or box cutter carefully. Don’t cut yourself and watch out for people near you so you don’t accidentally slash them.
Learn to lift. Get a good grip on the object you need to lift. Bend at the knees to life, not the waist. Keep the object close to your body and do not lift over your head.
Team up. For large items, make sure you have more than 1 person moving it. If you you think it will take 2 people to move something, also have an extra person on-hand to supervise.
Be prepared. Have water and some food ready to serve tired movers. Also have a first aid kit on-hand , with plenty of things such as band-aids, alcohol swabs, bandages, pins and antiseptic. In the event of an emergency, have a cell phone available (if you’ve already had your phone disconnected) in case you have to call 911.
If you take care of yourself and other people while you move, you’ll avoid stress while moving as well as a trip to the mergency room.
